Capalbio is a gorgeous hilltop town with a breathtaking view over the rolling hills of the Maremma countryside. Protected by Medieval fortified walls, this enchanting town will take you back in time as you wonder through its picturesque alleyways and charming squares. Of particular interest are the 12th century Pieve di San Nicola Church, which boasts 15th century frescoes and a magnificent bell tower, the Aldobrandeschi Castle which to this date still houses Puccini’s Piano, and the Madonna della Provvidenza Oratory, located just outside the town walls, where one can admire 16th century frescoes attributed to the school of Pinturicchio.
The impressive preservation of artistic and architectural heritage, spectacular setting and delicious selection of traditional cuisine and local wines make Capalbio a prime destination amongst the Italian elite, may they be politicians, film stars, art connoisseurs or food and wine enthusiasts. In all, the perfect place for a taste of Tuscany’s best!
Niki de Saint Phalle’s Tarot Garden
The Tarot Garden is located on the hill of Garavicchio in proximity of Capalbio. It is an artistic park, created by the French-born artist Niki de Saint Phalle, composed of 22 monumental statues set in the lush vegetation of the Maremma countryside. Inspired by the characters of the Tarots, the statues are decorated with colorful ceramic and glass tiles and reach 12 to 15 meters in height. Some of them are so big that they are actually inhabitable and the artist himself even lived inside one of them during the realization this project. The Garden, which opened to the public in 1997, took 17 years to reach its current aspect and is considered one of the most important Ambient Art projects in Italy. This truly unique and magical park conjures the senses and makes for a delightful contrast to the rustic edifices of the surrounding area.
