Island of Giglio

The Island of Giglio is maybe the most famous Island of the Tuscan archipelago. It is almost entirely mountainous with the highest peak at 496 meters above sea level. Its breathtaking coastline boasts 27 kilometers spectacular granite rock formations, rich vegetation and enchanting little bays. It is a meta for those who practice deep sea diving thanks to its uncontaminated waters and magnificent seabed where one can admire gorgeous red sea fans and an impressive variety of marine fauna.

Thanks to its strategic position and towering peak, this beautiful island has been populated throughout the centuries. Inhabited since the Iron ages, it became an important Etruscan military base and played a significant role under the Roman Empire; it is even directly mentioned in documents written by Julius Cesar in person!

In 1544, the island was pillaged by the pirate Khayr al-Din, known as the infamous Barbarossa. He killed all that opposed him and deported over 700 inhabitants to be used as slaves. Later, the Noble Medici family repopulated the island with inhabitants originating from the area of Siena. The island of Giglio continued to suffer attacks by the Saracens up until 1799.
